In the art of massage, there are paths that not only relax the body but also touch the soul. California massage and Lomi Lomi massage, although born in different cultures—California and Hawaii, respectively—share a common vision: the body is not treated, it is honored. Both techniques use fluid, enveloping, and loving movements that awaken bodily memories, release emotional tension, and bring us back to the present.
1. Origin and philosophy
Californian Massage
California massage originated in the 1960s and 1970s at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, in a context of seeking personal growth, emotional liberation, and body awareness. Inspired by movements such as Gestalt, Alexander Lowen's bodywork, and somatic therapies, this massage is an act of mindful presence and conscious touch.
Her philosophy is based on accompanying the client on an inner journey, where loving contact, a slow pace, and deep listening allow the body to express itself and release itself without judgment.
Lomi Lomi Massage
Lomi Lomi is an ancient Hawaiian tradition. It's not just a technique, but a spiritual practice that is part of the traditional medicine of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific. "Lomi" means "to knead" or "to rub," and its repetition (Lomi Lomi) reflects the intensity, depth, and respect of the touch.
Its philosophical basis is unconditional love, or Aloha, and the principle that everything is interconnected. It's about restoring the body's vital flow (Mana) and harmonizing the individual with nature, ancestors, and their life purpose.
2. Technique and contact style
Both massages are characterized by long, enveloping, rhythmic movements that mimic the waves of the sea, but each with its own unique signature:
Californian: Slow, sweeping, enveloping movements that integrate the entire body, primarily using the forearms, palms, and occasionally the elbows. Emphasizes body awareness, breathing, and the therapist's emotional presence. May include energy work and pauses to allow the body to process.
Lomi Lomi: fluid, rhythmic movements with the forearms, sometimes crisscrossed, continuously sweeping across the entire body, even beneath it. It is performed as a continuous, uninterrupted ritual, often accompanied by chanting or conscious breathing (ha), with spiritual and energetic intent.
3. Physical and emotional benefits
Both massages, although different in form and tradition, share multiple benefits:
Deep release of muscle tension
Improves circulation and the lymphatic system
Greater body and emotional awareness
Balance of the nervous system
Release of blocked emotions
Reconnection with the body, pleasure and presence
Deep state of relaxation, rest and confidence
The difference lies in the approach: while Californian massage can be more introspective and emotionally therapeutic, Lomi Lomi tends to be more spiritual, linked to harmony with the vital energy of the universe.
4. Which one to choose? Or how to integrate them?
It's not necessary to choose one or the other as if they were mutually exclusive. Both can be integrated into a unique massage experience, tailored to your specific physical, emotional, and energetic needs at the time.
In my massage practice, I often combine the best of both traditions: the emotional attention and gentleness of California massage with the fluidity and sacred connection of Lomi Lomi. Each session is a personalized journey, guided by intuitive listening and respect for the body as a temple.
